Your First Facial: What to Book When You Have No Idea

Your First Facial: What to Book When You Have No Idea

Booking a facial sounds simple until you open the menu. There are different devices, different ingredients, and several treatments that all seem to promise the glow you’re looking for.

If you’re not sure which one to choose, you’re allowed to ask. You don’t need to research every treatment before making an appointment.

Start with what’s bothering you

You’ll get further describing your skin than trying to choose a machine.

Maybe your skin feels tight after cleansing. Maybe you’re bothered by blackheads around your nose, or your usual products have started to sting. You might simply want a relaxing facial and some help understanding your routine.

Those are useful details. Bring them up when booking, especially if you’re unsure whether a treatment suits you.

At Cosmo, a skin consultation can help you explore the options before you choose.

Tell us what kind of appointment you want

There’s a difference between wanting an hour to unwind and wanting to focus on a particular skin concern. Both are valid reasons to book, but they may lead to different recommendations.

Your budget matters, too. So does your calendar. If you have a wedding on Saturday, mention it before choosing a treatment for Friday. Ask whether redness, sensitivity or other temporary effects are possible, and how much time to leave before an event.

If extractions make you nervous, say so. If you’d rather keep things gentle for your first visit, say that, too.

You don’t need every add-on

It’s tempting to choose the facial with the longest description, especially when you want to make the appointment count.

But extra steps should have a purpose. Exfoliation, for example, needs to suit your skin and take your current products into account. More intensive treatment isn’t automatically a better choice.

Ask what an add-on would contribute. You should be able to understand why it’s being suggested and decide whether it’s something you want.

Before you come in

Take photos of the skincare you use, including prescription products and anything you apply only occasionally. Tell your provider about allergies, skin conditions, medication and recent cosmetic procedures.

Don’t add a scrub or at-home peel to “get your skin ready.” Follow the clinic’s preparation instructions, and check before changing prescribed skincare or medication.

If you have sunburn, a rash or active irritation, contact the clinic before your appointment. The treatment may need to be adjusted or postponed, and some concerns need medical assessment first.

Before you leave, make sure you know what to use at home, what to avoid and what results are realistic. One appointment may be a starting point rather than the whole plan.

And if you’re still staring at the menu? Book a skin consultation at Cosmo. Bring your questions—we can help you choose from there.
